Director of Stewardship - Area Funds
Berkshire Taconic seeks a full-time stewardship director for its area funds. As a member of a four-person stewardship team, this position will focus on actively growing community endowments, cultivating and developing the foundation's 11 area funds and overseeing volunteer committees with their fundraising and grantmaking. The director will report to the president and share two support staff with the other stewardship directors.
Responsibilities
The area fund stewardship director oversees the development and operations of 11 area funds. She/he will ensure these funds grow their assets and exercise strong grantmaking programs. He/she will guide the funds to operate within the policies and procedures of the foundation, pursue development goals consistent with the funds' and the foundation's strategic plan; build endowments that will produce the program dollars needed for their grantmaking objectives; adhere to "best practices" in grantmaking and are active ambassadors for the foundation.
This job includes, but is not limited to:
- Motivate, inspire, structure and support volunteer committees
- Facilitate advisory committees' relationship with Berkshire Taconic
- Manage the calendar for multiple area funds' grantmaking, events, solicitation mailings and meetings
- Plan and implement fundraising strategies and campaigns with area fund advisory committees
- Generate solicitation mailings and develop promotional material
- Keep accurate meeting notes to ensure a written history of events and group decisions
- Track and report financial data to committees
- Manage a database of donors, potential donors and nonprofits
- Monitor and follow up on challenge grants, pledge and promise payments
- Ensure that advisory committees are current on issues affecting their geographic areas
- Develop special grant initiatives, from time to time, to address specific community needs or opportunities
- Develop annual grant guidelines and applications
- Oversee distribution of guidelines and applications to qualifying local nonprofits
- Receive applications, reviewing for completeness
- Doing site visits, either alone or with committee members or Berkshire Taconic board members, to prepare for area funds' grantmaking meeting
- Monitor progress of nonprofits' participation in the Nonprofit Learning Program
- Ensure advisory committee is in compliance with Berkshire Taconic's stated "best practices" for grantmaking
- Report on grantees use of monies awarded
Work with management team to:
- ensure all external and internal communications and practices are consistent with foundation's policy
- problem solve with colleagues on foundation-wide issues
- serve as generous colleague, providing advice, support and inspiration to management team members
- maintain open learning posture
Qualifications
In addition to having excellent volunteer management, donor cultivation, development campaign and event organization skills, the candidate needs:- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Database management experience
- Imaginative and creative problem-solving skills
- To be accurate and detail-oriented
- Capacity to work well as a team member
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- To work well with a wide range of personalities
- To be professional, discreet and to inspire confidence
- Strong communication skills - written and oral
- Commitment to professional development
Experience
- Minimum 5 years as a project manager or senior manager in a nonprofit
- Experience in basic nonprofit fundraising
- Experience working with volunteer committees
Education
Minimum bachelor's degree required
