Adams Resident Wins Public Service Award

July 15, 2010

SHEFFIELD, MA—Roy Thompson of Adams is the 2010 recipient of The Margery and William Barrett Public Service Award for Adams, Cheshire and Savoy. Mr. Thompson will receive $500 to designate to the nonprofit of his choice, in his name.

Mr. Thompson was chosen because he met the award criteria of impact of the nominee’s work on the community and the nominee’s leadership, perseverance and innovation. Mr. Thompson has served on the Adams Board of Health, was a member of the fire department for 26 years, had a long running TV program on Adams’ public access channel, and has contributed to the community in a variety of other ways. Sue Foster, secretary of the Adams Board of Health said, “Roy is everywhere in town and available to everybody. He has vision and compassion and is a strong advocate for the average person.”

This award commemorates the extraordinary generosity of Margery Barrett, who gave over $3 million during and after her lifetime to benefit the communities of Adams, Cheshire and Savoy. The Barrett award is given annually to an individual who has shown their generous spirit and strong commitment to the communities of Adams, Cheshire or Savoy through their paid or volunteer work by breaking new ground or improving the economic, educational, civic, cultural or social fabric of the community.
