WHO CAN APPLY
The scholarship offers support to new immigrants who have been in the United States for five years or less and are studying toward a degree at Berkshire Community College.
This scholarship was established in memory of Gerald Dickler, a son of immigrants who became a successful New York City attorney. He struggled to get through school, college and law school despite his parents’ lack of education and often desperate poverty.
The scholarship recognizes students with qualities that Mr. Dickler embodied as a young man: academic success, leadership potential and a concern for the needs and rights of others.
The goal of the New World Fund Scholarship is to provide scholarships to Berkshire Community College (BCC) students who have been in the country for five years or less, show leadership skills and who have financial need.
There will be one or two scholarships given for each school year. Awards will be paid to the college provided BCC confirms that the student is enrolled and in good academic standing. Scholarship recipients may reapply for funding for a second school year, as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
The scholarship committee will review requests from candidates who meet the eligibility requirements above. according to the following criteria:
- Academic success, generally shown by a GPA of 3.0 or better
- Evidence of leadership potential
- Demonstrated concern for others
- Financial need
